After flying a jet filled with relief supplies, doctors and Scientologist healers to Haiti, John Travolta told reporters at the airport in Port-au-Prince, “We have the ability to actually help make a difference in the situation in Haiti, and I just can’t see not using this plane to help.”
The Associated Press reported that Mr. Travolta flew his own Boeing 707 to Haiti from Florida on Monday, and brought four tons of ready-to-eat military rations and medical supplies along with “a team including doctors and Scientology ministers.”
The Scientologists will join other members of the church who arrived in Haiti last week and have been offering touch therapy to badly injured earthquake survivors at the General Hospital in Port-au-Prince.
On Saturday, the French news agency Agence France-Presse reported that one Scientologist from Paris who gave her name as Sylvie claimed that the controversial church’s techniques were working:
“We’re trained as volunteer ministers; we use a process called ‘assist’ to follow the nervous system to reconnect the main points, to bring back communication,” she said. “When you get a sudden shock to a part of your body the energy gets stuck, so we re-establish communication within the body by touching people through their clothes, and asking people to feel the touch.”
Because, you know, that’s what the people of Haiti need… to be touched… through their clothes.
Where is one place you would like to visit that you've never been?
England. I’ve never left North America and have barely left the US (Toronto and Tijuana are the only two places I’ve been to outside of these borders). People that know me and have been over there tell me that I would love it, especially London, which I’ve always had a craving to go to. My grandmother is also from Lowestoft, which is the most eastern city in England, and I would love to visit there someday.
Please describe the type of film and/or music festival you would curate. Any particular location or theme?
I’ve been to a few film festivals and a few music festivals in my time and let me say, I fell in love with SXSW last year. I loved the format of having the first half be the film portion and the last half be the music showcase. The film selection wasn’t quite as good as Sundance or Toronto festivals, two film festivals I’ve been lucky enough to go to in previous years, but I also wasn’t freezing my ass off in Austin. And while I did not quite feel hipster enough for most of the music showcases, I loved the intimate settings and the fact that there’s SO MUCH music happening all at once. I’m generally not a fan of larger music festivals because I downright despise the large crowds. I skipped Coachella the year the Pixies and Rilo Kiley played (two of my favorite bands) because of that very reason.
So, all that said, if I were to oversee any type of festival, it would probably be something similar to SXSW’s format combining both film and music, and perhaps even a comic convention of sorts? Austin also has Staple: The Independent Media Expo running in the month of March and I’m pretty sure my head would explode if it ever coincided with or around the same time as SXSW.
One thing I would change from the SXSW format would be to integrate the film and the music sections more, and not really have it be the two separate entities that it is. From musicals (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) to films about music (“Almost Famous”), to films that use music to help define characters (“(500) Days of Summer”), I think film and music have a really good connection to each other that could be celebrated a bit more. So I guess that would be the theme of my little festival there.
I’ve only been to Washington, DC in passing so I’m no expert, but that link pretty much has most of what I would do that weekend. Also, if you’re into them, Kings of Convenience are playing the 9:30 Club.
Would you like to share this plate of onion rings with me?
You can have them all!
I have a random allergy to onions. It can be anything from a mild stomach ache to something that’s pretty close to food poisoning, depending on how many are eaten. Makes it a little challenging when ordering pasta or curry dishes as onions are usually already in the sauces.
