This song was written by Kim Deal for a Shrek movie, but ended up getting finished by the Pixies when they first reunited in 2004. It would have been a great song either way, but the contributions of the other guys push this over the top: Joey Santiago’s lead parts are so very him with that wonderfully distinct Doolittle tone, and Black Francis’ backing vocals add a touch of crankiness as a complement to Deal’s sunniness. I love how joyful this song is, and the language Kim uses to convey the sentiment: “I can hear the buzzing modulations of the universe but you’re the first to make me feel it!,” “You know me, I love the universe, I love all the listeners! Watch out: Here’s 50,000 watts of good will!” This is glorious, life-affirming bubblegum, and it’s one of my favorite things any of these people have ever done, and for God’s sake, it bears reminding that they ARE THE PIXIES, so it’s saying a lot. They debuted this live in San Diego at my second Pixies show and I nearly had a heart attack from excitement. It was so unexpected and wonderful to hear, not just from a statistical standpoint (“HOLY SHIT I AM HEARING A NEW PIXIES SONG PERFORMED LIVE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER MY MIND CAN NOT COMPREHEND THIS”), but also because I just really love this song. Unfortunately, the crowd did not react the same way I did and they only played this a couple more times before ditching it from their live sets.
